Find any 201- phone number in New Jersey
The 201 area code is a North American telephone area code for the state of New Jersey. The 201 area code was created in 1947 as one of the original 87 area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). It originally served the northern area of the state of New Jersey, including cities such as Jersey City and Hackensack.
The NANP is the system used to designate area codes for telephone numbers in the US, Canada, and some Caribbean counties. It is designed to allow simpler dialing between areas, and standardizes the length of telephone numbers. It also allows phone numbers from different geographical regions to be easily distinguished when identifying caller information. The NANP assigns area codes to different regions which can then be broken down even further into prefixes and exchange codes. This divides the same area into much smaller numbers of phone numbers, which is necessary owing to the increasing number of cell phones and landlines.
