Find any 217- phone number in Illinois

The 217 area code is the phone numbering plan code for the central and western part of the U.S. state of Illinois. The number code was created in 1947 and covers most of central Illinois, with the exception of the northwest part of the state which is within the 815 area code. This area code covers the large cities of Joliet, Decatur, and Springfield, as well as many smaller towns and cities. The 217 area code also covers part of the Chicago metropolitan area along the northern border of Illinois.

The 217 area code is part of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) which was developed to organize the telephone networks of the United States, Canada, and some Caribbean countries. The development of this plan was needed to establish national uniformity in identifying regions or service areas so that anybody in the NANP could dial any other telephone number in the NANP without needing to know a local area code. The NANP also allowed phone companies to create phone line portability, so that customers could keep their number when they moved within an area code and when a new area code split was created.
