The 337 area code is the telephone area code for the five-county region of southwestern Louisiana encompassing the cities of Lake Charles, Lafayette, Crowley, Eunice, Jennings, and Opelousas. The area code was created in 1999 as a split of the 318 area code, which had previously served the entire state of Louisiana.
The 337 area code is part of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), which was established in 1947. By 1949, the plan had divided the United States and its possessions into 86 numbering plan areas (NPAs), each of which was assigned three-digit codes known as area codes. Louisiana was assigned the 318 area code, but with increased demand for telephone lines, the region was later split into two codes, the 318 and 337 area codes, to accommodate further growth.
