The 437 area code was officially introduced as a Canadian area code in 2013. It was created as part of the North American Numbering Plan to provide telephone number service to the Greater Toronto Area in the province of Ontario. Since its introduction, the 437 area code has been used for landline numbers, pager services, and more recently, mobile phones.
The North American Numbering Plan was created in 1947 as part of an agreement between Canada, the US, and parts of the Caribbean. It serves to structure the allocation of telephone numbers by providing a standard numbering system which facilitates the efficient operation of telephone services on a large scale. With the North American Numbering Plan, area codes are assigned to specific regions and it is not possible to make calls between regions that do not share the same area code. Therefore the 437 area code is used exclusively within the Greater Toronto Area and cannot be used to make calls to other parts of Ontario or the world.
