The 603 area code is located in the American North East, covering the entire state of New Hampshire. It was first implemented in 1947 as one of the first 86 area codes created by the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). This system was adopted by all the countries in the North American Numbering Plan Agreement to make it easier for people to place cross-border calls.

The 603 area code is divided into many geographic regions like Dover, Manchester and Portsmouth. It also provides a variety of services, such as VoIP and toll-free numbers. Since then, the area code has gone through several splits to help deal with a growing population. In 1999, the 603 area code was split, creating the 603 and the 617 area codes. This enabled residents of Manchester, Keene and the rest of the state to call each other without running up long-distance fees.
