Find any 706- phone number in Georgia
The 706 area code is one of the original codes assigned when the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) was created in 1947. It stretches across a large portion of the US state of Georgia and the boundaries have remained unchanged since its creation. The 706 area code covers 33 counties, from the Blue Ridge Mountains to most of the Georgia coast, with its largest cities being Augusta, Columbus and Athens.
The NANP works by dividing the country into ten blocks, also known as an area codes, that are made up of three digits. The first digit of the three represents the particular region and is a core indicator of where the call is going. It also helps providers of telecommunications carrier services such as telephones to route calls correctly. The second and third digits of the code, otherwise known as a numbering plan area, divide the region up further. This allows the NANP to handle more than 10 million subscribers in each area code. The NANP even allows each subscriber to have multiple telephone numbers.
