Find any 787- phone number in Puerto Rico
The 787 area code is the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) area code for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. It was created in July 2001 when the commonwealth, which had previously been using only one area code (809), needed additional lines for new telephone subscribers. It is the latest addition to the commonwealth’s area codes and the second to be assigned to Puerto Rico by the NANP.
The North American Numbering Plan divides an area into specific geographic regions, which are then assigned three-digit area codes. After these numbers are used up rather quickly, a new area code is added to the area. As population and demand for telecommunication services increase in a region, it is often necessary to add a new area code to keep up with the demand. It is also possible to assign multiple area codes to the same region so that the NANP can add more capacity or allow regional carriers to offer services. Puerto Rico’s area code 787 is a result of such changes.
