Find any 980- phone number in North Carolina

The 980 area code was introduced in 2001 as an overlay to the 704 area code in North Carolina. This created what is known as a three-way split in which a given geographic area uses three distinct area codes. 980 was created to provide more phone numbers for customers in the Charlotte metropolitan area and nearby towns in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties that had experienced phone number exhaustion. It is part of a group of area codes known as the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), which are used to plan and administer phone numbering resources.

The NANP is a unified system of numbering plan areas in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. All telephone numbers under the North American Numbering Plan are 10-digit numbers in the format NXX-NXX-XXXX, with the N and X characters representing number digits. The first three digits are known as the Numbering Plan Area (NPA) code, which is also known as the area code. The 980 area code is just one of more than 200 area codes in North America that are part of the NANP, and it is used for two central North Carolina counties of Mecklenburg and Cabarrus.
